Update on Virtual Summit

Dear Colleagues,

I hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy. These are challenging times for our nation and the world. Educators at all levels are learning how to work differently in these times of “social distancing.” I’m sure many of you are either frantically trying to figure out how to design your courses for online learning or supporting those who are. I continue to be inspired by the determination, resourcefulness, and courage of those who work in education. Thank you for all your efforts.

Update on the Virtual Summit

Here at the Foundation, we are busy getting ready for our virtual Summit. Things are moving quickly, and while not all the details have been finalized, I wanted to give you a sense of where we stand right now. The virtual Summit will stretch over four days, March 31 – April 3. We will have three live plenaries. I will open the Summit with my keynote on March 31 at 2:30 p.m. PST.  The other keynote speakers will be Francesca Gino, author of Rebel Talent: Why it Pays to Break the Rules in Work and Life on April 1 at 2:30 p.m.; and John B. Diamond and Amanda E. Lewis, authors of the award-winning book Despite The Best Intentions: Why Racial Inequality Persists in Good Schools on April 2 at 2:30 p.m.

Because such a big part of the Summit has been the interaction that occurs among improvers during our presentations, we will offer 46 interactive breakout sessions streamed live via Zoom. In addition, 28 pre-recorded sessions and more than 50 posters will be available online for on-demand viewing by attendees. I am also excited to offer all registered attendees an electronic copy of the uncorrected proof pages of my forthcoming book, Improvement in Action: Advancing Quality in America’s Schools. You will be able to access these amazing proof cases before the book officially comes out in the summer.

I know that many of you may not be able to access the content immediately as it goes live as you continue to scramble in managing all the changes going on at home and in your professional work lives both right now and in the weeks ahead. Our implementation of a virtual Summit has been designed with that in mind. Improvement conversations will start during Summit week and continue well beyond that. All of the content developed during the virtual Summit will be available online to registrants post-Summit as well. We encourage you, as time and schedules (including social distancing guidance) permits, to invite your colleagues to join with you in local learning sessions drawing on these materials.

While we will lose some of the intensity of the face-to-face colleagueship that is our special community, the shift to a virtual Summit allows us to extend to you and for you to extend to your colleagues more of the Summit learning opportunities that normally are reserved only for on-site participants. It is our way of giving something back to the Summit community, something to come together around (even virtually), as you continue to push improvement forward for your students, teachers, schools and the communities you serve.

The Summit on Improvement in Education has always been such a special gathering, and now, more than ever, I am excited to translate that spirit of community and positivity into an online space.
